The Calling of God

"I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus."

The Lively Oracles

What are the “oracles” the Bible talks about? The scriptures. Speaking of the OT scriptures:

  • Moses received them from the Angel of the LORD (Acts 7:38)
  • They were committed to the Jews (Rom 3:2)
  • They contain principles which must be taught (Heb 5:12), some of which are enumerated in Heb 6:1-2

In the OT, the word “oracle” is used to refer to the most holy place in the temple (and before the temple, 2 Sam 16:23, the tabernacle).

The oracle was not the word of God; it was the place from which God spoke to them. It was given by inspiration of God, and built according to his pattern; nonetheless, the holy place, without the presence of God, was nothing more than a room.

The scriptures are called the “oracles”, not because they are the word of God, but because they are a place (or rather, “places”) from which God speaks to us. They are given by inspiration of God, and built according to his pattern; nonetheless, the scriptures, without the Spirit of God, are nothing more than a book.

As the holy place (the oracle) was built in the temple, so are we (the temple) meant to build the oracles within us, so that God can speak his word through us as he did from the temple, and from the scriptures; this is possible through Jesus Christ:

“If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 4:11)

Again,

“In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this he spake of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)” (John 7:37-39)
